چکیده

The objective of this work is to develop bioactive glass coatings for metallic orthopedic implants. A new family of glasses in the SiO2–Na2O–K2O–CaO–MgO–P2O5 system has been synthesized and characterized. The glass properties (thermal expansion, softening and transformation temperatures, density and hardness) are in line with the predictions of established empirical models. The optimized firing conditions to fabricate coatings on Ti-based and Co–Cr alloys have been determined and related to the glass properties and the interfacial reactions. Excellent adhesion to alloys has been achieved through the formation of 100–200 nm thick interfacial layers (Ti5Si3 on Ti-based alloys and CrOx on Co–Cr). Finally, glass coatings, approximately 100 mm thick, have been fabricated onto commercial Ti alloy-based dental implants. # 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Titanium addition influences antibacterial activity of bioactive glass coatings on metallic implants

In an attempt to combat the possibility of bacterial infection and insufficient bone growth around metallic, surgical implants, bioactive glasses may be employed as coatings. In this work, silica-based and borate-based glass series were synthesized for this purpose and subsequently characterized in terms of antibacterial behavior, solubility and cytotoxicity. Borate-based glasses were found to ...

Biomimetic Bonelike Composites and Novel Bioactive Glass Coatings

Metallic orthopaedic implants have been successfully used for decades but they have serious shortcomings related to their osseointegration and the fact that their mechanical properties do not match those of bone. This paper reviews recent advances in the fabrication of novel coatings to improve implant osseointegration and in the development of a new generation of hybrid organic-inorganic impla...

Multilayer bioactive glass/zirconium titanate thin films in bone tissue engineering and regenerative dentistry

Surface modification, particularly coatings deposition, is beneficial to tissue-engineering applications. In this work, bioactive glass/zirconium titanate composite thin films were prepared by a sol-gel spin-coating method. The surface features of the coatings were studied by scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and spectroscopic reflection analyses. The results show that unif...

Design and optimization of poly lactic acid/bioglass composite screw for orthopedic applications

However, problems such as osteoporosis due to high elasticity of metals relative to bones, and local infections and systemic problems caused by releasing metallic ions have motivated research on replacing metallic screws with non metallic ones. In this study, the composite containing poly-l-lactic acid and bioactive glass fibers were considered for the design of the screw using ABAQUS software ...
